What is kirtan?

Kirtan or Kirtana (Sanskrit: कीर्तन; IAST: Kīrtana) is a Sanskrit word that means "narrating, reciting, telling, describing" of an idea or story. It also refers to a genre of religious performance arts, connoting a musical form of narration or shared recitation, particularly of spiritual or religious ideas.

“Hard to express in words the immense beauty, peace, love, and joy transmitted in the music by Tejase. I have been blessed to attend many of their Kirtan events over the years. Each and every time my spirit is uplifted and my heart is opened ... a return to a state of grace. Thank you from the depths of my being!!!”            -Stephanie Filardi

"I have participated in Tejase’s kirtans since the group was formed eight years ago by two of my favorite yoga teachers, Ann Casapini (lead vocalist) and Denise DeLuca (harmonium). Arthur Rotfeld is a very gifted guitarist and composer who creates original melodies for Sanskrit texts that are beautiful, moving, and easy for participants to follow. Ann's voice is warm and gorgeous against Denise's heartfelt harmonium accompaniment, and very creative and subtle percussion by Steve Mansfield. Over the years I have brought my children, and the Tejase kirtans have become beloved family activities—perhaps most especially enjoyed by my 20-year-old autistic son."          –Gretchen P. from Bronxville, NY

"The kirtan experience with Tejase experience is wonderful. The music is awesome—it is composed by Arthur Rotfield with a western sound that flows. Those of us in the gathering easily follow the wonderful vocal leads of Ann Casapini, Denise DeLuca, and Arthur. The result is a feeling of belonging and of peace. The music is bound together by the brilliant work of percussionist Steve Mansfield.  It is an experience that I try not to miss."           –Andy G.from City Island, NY

I remember the day that I first played my new Tejase CD.  I was on my way to my Saturday afternoon yoga class that was 25 minutes away. I was feeling as if I was coming down with something and I knew that chanting always makes me feel better so I popped the CD into the player in the car and chanted along until I reached building where I teach.  Shortly before I started the class, I noticed I felt more upbeat and that whatever malaise I was feeling was gone! Ah, the healing properties of chanting! -Reyna G. from Bronxville, NY
